John Unger was born and raised in Arkansas. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville and earned his Bachelor’s degree in History. While at the U of A he was a student manager for the Razorback basketball team. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 2003, Unger accepted a men’s basketball coaching position at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. While working at LSUS, he coached the number one team in the country and earned his Masters in Education. Unger spent seven years in Northwest Louisiana, three years working at LSUS and four years as an instructor and men’s basketball coach at Bossier Parish Community College. While at BPPC he worked in the Behavioral Science Department teaching a number of different classes.
In 2010, Unger began his public school teaching career in Decatur, Arkansas. During his time with the Decatur School District he has served as a teacher, coach, Dean of Students, acting principal, athletic director and alternative learning director. Unger has been a leader in school innovation for rural, diverse districts across Arkansas and has presented at several conferences on school redesign. Under his guidance, Decatur Middle School was acknowledged as an Arkansas School of Innovation in 2017. During his time at Decatur, he brought in over $200,000 in grants for students and staff. Unger’s basketball teams also experienced great success, winning three straight conference championships from 2013-2015.
In 2017 he earned his Education Specialist degree from Arkansas State University and began his journey as a school principal. Mr. Unger was also in the inaugural class of the Association of American Educators Fellowship program in 2018-2019. Mr. Unger graduated from the Master Principal Program in the Spring of 2023. He is now a sitting board member of AAMLE.
Mr. Unger has served as the principal at West Fork Middle School from July of 2019 to May of 2024. He is married to Kelly and they have two children. When he is not working he is running, playing basketball, reading a good book, or supporting kids’ success in the community.
