Second Grade

Believe it or not, we are already into the month of September!  The students seem to be adjusting very well to our busy schedules. As you all know, the curriculum in second grade is more difficult than in first grade.  However, we will be reviewing many of the concepts that your child learned in first grade. We work hard all year long preparing the students for third grade. This takes the full year and much hard work. As we work, we try to have as much fun as possible.  If your child seems to be having any trouble adjusting to the new workload, just hang in there, at times it takes some students a little longer to adjust.

In second grade, we will be participating in several programs to enhance our curriculum.  First, your student will be apart of a guided reading group.  Each teacher has completed testing to determine what reading level your student is reading on.  Other students in the class who are also reading at that level will be grouped together and given explicit instruction to meet their needs.

In Saxon math, your child will be introduced to a new concept each day.  We will be learning math facts and completing a math worksheet in class.  Each day, concepts that have been previously taught will be reviewed in order for your student to fully understand the concept.  In addition to Saxon math, your child will be participating in CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction), which allows your child to freely explore all the ways to possibly solve a math word problem.

Finally, in spelling, your child will be apart of a spelling group (just like he/she is apart of a reading group).  Again, your child’s teacher has completed testing that determines what level of spelling your child is performing at.  Based upon those results, spelling lists will be generated and given to groups of students who are spelling at the same level.  Each week, a different “feature” will be concentrated on.  All the words on your child’s list will be apart of the “feature” that is being emphasized.  A spelling test will be held each Friday.

Thank you for all the support and understanding you give us each day.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to come by the school at anytime.  Also, you may send us an e-mail.  Thank you for entrusting your child to our care.  We hope to be the best teachers we can be for your child in second grade.  We look forward to a positive year that will result in lots of smiles for everyone!

Sincerely,
