First Grade is off to a great start. We are reviewing our beginning sounds and working on short vowel words. We are also reviewing our sight words and making new words everyday to add to the word wall and use in our journal writing. In shared reading, we have been learning to recognize rhyming words and learn all about words, sentences, and how they work together to help us read. We will begin guided reading groups soon with our teachers and also begin to work in literacy centers to practice our reading and writing.
In math we are using the Saxon math program to learn new math skills and add to the ones we already know from kindergarten. Recently, we have learned about number order, math picture stories, and writing number sentences to match a picture. It is a lot of fun, and we get to practice some at home with our parents too. We can also tell the difference between left and right, ordinal position, and the doubles addition facts. We are learning so much!
Science and social studies are big favorites in first grade. Already, we have learned all about our neighborhoods and communities, community helpers, and where we live in the world. In the next few weeks, we will be diving into the five senses, living and nonliving things, and plants. We can’t wait to become young scientists!
Thanks to all our first grade parents for your support and donations of necessities and your time. We appreciate all you do!!
